Protect Your Car from Potholes They come in all shapes and sizes, waiting for an unsuspecting motorist to drive by and fall into their waiting trap. Their numbers are enormous and Florida has become one of their favorite places to exist. They are potholes, and Florida’s rainy season is a perfect environment for them to multiply. Potholes are formed as moisture collects in small holes and cracks in the road surface. As the moisture expands during weather changes, the pavement breaks up and, eventually, a pothole appears. To aid motorists in protecting their vehicles from pothole damage, AAA Auto Club South recommends the following precautionary steps. Make sure your vehicle tires have enough tread and are properly inflated (refer to the label on the driver’s door.) The tire is the most important cushion between a vehicle and a pothole. Inspect the suspension of the vehicle, making certain struts and shock absorbers are in good condition. Changes in vehicle handling, excessive vibration or uneven tire wear can indicate bad shocks or struts. Have the suspension inspected by a certified technician. Make a point of checking the road ahead for potholes. Alert drivers may have enough time to avoid potholes. Before swerving to avoid a pothole, check surrounding traffic to avoid collisions. If a pothole cannot be avoided, reduce speed safely. Hitting the pothole at higher speeds increases the chance of damage to tires, wheels and suspension components. Beware of water. A puddle of water can disguise a deep pothole. Sometimes, hitting an approaching pothole is inevitable. If this happens, it can alter the wheel alignment of a vehicle, causing uneven tire wear and difficult steering. Any major change in the steering or handling of a vehicle after hitting a pothole should be inspected immediately by a qualified technician. Beware! That innocent looking hole in the road ahead may be a pothole waiting to damage your car’s alignment or suspension. Taking these precautionary steps may save you from falling, literally, into their trap.
