Santa Fe Community College Teaching Zoo 3000 N.W. 83rd St. Gainesville, Fla. (352) 395-5604 This community college is the only site east of the Mississippi River where students can learn zookeeping in a college-sanctioned program. Admission to the program is very competitive. Visitors can tour the zoo where students learn the finer points of caring for zoo animals including endangered species from all over the world. From Interstate 75, exit at 39th Avenue and go east. Take a right at 83rd Avenue, which is after the third traffic light. You'll soon see Santa Fe Community College, where you'll take a right. Then go left at the racquetball courts. Open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday or by appointment Monday through Friday. Tours of the teaching zoo are currently free, but prices are subject to change.
